College Supervised - Speech Practicum

This consists of supervised, on-campus clinical practica and off-campus, college-supervised clinical practica totaling at least 150 clock hours that include experiences with students with speech and language disabilities in early childhood, childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. The off-campus practica shall include experiences in elementary and/or secondary schools.

Applicants may also meet this requirement by documenting at least one year full-time teaching experience as a teacher of speech and language disabilities.  Only paid teaching experience gained in a private school, in a school outside New York State or in a New York State public school on the basis of holding a NYS Supplementary Speech and Language Disabilities certificate would be acceptable. For such experiences the chief school officer (superintendent, headmaster, etc.) completes the Substitution of Experience for Student Teaching form verifying satisfactory experience and returns it directly to this office.

The following experiences are unacceptable:

  • Practica completed solely for the purpose of a New York State speech license.

  • Practica that are less than 150 clock hours or that do not take place in all the necessary settings.

  • Practica NOT identified in the college’s catalog as satisfying the practica requirement for teacher certification.

  • Paid experience not in accordance with regulation, eg. working without a certificate in a setting that requires one.

  • Experience working with children for medically related aspects of speech, i.e. experience that is not linked to an IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan) or IEP (Individualized Education Plan) is not acceptable.
