Permanent Certificate

Description

The Permanent certificate is the advanced-level certificate for individuals who possess a valid Provisional certificate. The Permanent certificate is NOT issued automatically; you must apply for the certificate.

Who Can Qualify

  • Administrative and Supervisory (School Administrator and Supervisor)

  • Pupil Personnel Services (School Attendance Teacher, School Counselor, School Dental Hygiene Teacher, School Nurse Teacher,  School Psychologist, School Social Worker)

    Permanent certificates are issued to individuals who:

    1. Meet all the requirements for the Permanent, OR
       
    2. Hold a valid Provisional certificate and who complete the requirements for a Permanent certificate in that same title within the lifetime of the Provisional certificate.
       

Requirements

General requirements for the Permanent certificate include:

  • Possession of a valid Provisional certificate in the same title.

  • Completion of two years of full-time experience in a public or nonpublic school, in the same title (administrative/supervisory, pupil personnel service).

  • An earned master's degree from an institution of higher education that is accredited by an institutional accrediting agency recognized for this purpose by the U.S. Department of Education.

If you are unable to meet the requirements for the Permanent certificate before your Provisional certificate expires, you may be eligible for a Provisional Renewal.

Validity Period

The Permanent certificate is valid for life, unless revoked for cause by the New York State Education Department.  NOTE:  The Provisional certificate is valid for five years from its effective date.
