edTPA Certification Requirement

The edTPAexternal link is a requirement for most New York State Initial teacher certificates. Through this national performance assessment, individuals demonstrate their readiness to teach by planning lessons that support their students’ strengths and needs, teaching the lessons in an educational setting, and assessing their students’ learning. The assessment requires candidates to videotape their work with students and reflect on their teaching.

Individuals must pass the edTPA in the subject area of the certification sought. Individuals in a teacher preparation program should work with faculty and/or staff to determine which edTPA to complete before registering for the assessment. Teachers applying for an Initial certificate through the Endorsement pathway are not required to pass any NYS certification exams, including the edTPA.

If you are applying for multiple teacher certificates and/or enrolled in a teacher preparation program leading to certification in multiple subject areas (e.g., Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) Generalist), then you would apply for a (first) Initial certificate in the subject area of your edTPA and apply for other Initial certificate(s) in the other subject area(s) through the “Additional Certificate” pathway. The edTPA is not required for additional certificates; individuals only need to pass one edTPA in the subject area of their (first) Initial certificate.

Applicants outside New York who are completing the edTPA must make sure that their handbook matches the handbook required for NYS certification (see below). These applicants must contact Pearson to figure out the process for getting the edTPA scored and transmitted onto their TEACH account. Finally, regardless of where the exam was taken, it must meet the NYS passing score to be acceptable (see below).
