Certificate of Qualification (CQ)

  • If you were issued a Certificate of Qualification (CQ) and never exchanged it for a Provisional certificate, you are no longer eligible for the Provisional certificate based on the CQ. You must apply for certification in a similar title and meet the requirements that are in place the date you apply.

 

Provisional Renewals - Pupil Personnel Service
  • If you hold a Pupil Personnel Service Provisional certificate, you may renew your expired Provisional certificate one time for a period of five years.

  • School Social Workers, School Psychologists, School Attendance Teachers, School Nurse Teachers, School Dental Hygiene Teacher
    • You must have completed all requirements for the Permanent certificate, with the exception of the experience requirement.
  • School Counselors
    • To qualify for the renewed Provisional certificate for school counselors, you are required to have completed all requirements for the Permanent certificate, with the exception of the academic and experience requirements.

 

Provisional Renewals – School Administrator and Supervisor

  • If you hold a School Administrator and Supervisor provisional certificate, you may renew your expired provisional certificate one time for a period of five years, if you have not already had a provisional renewal, after September 1, 2013.This is a one-time opportunity for you to complete the experience requirement for the permanent School Administrator and Supervisor certificate.
    • You must have completed all requirements for the Permanent certificate, with the exception of the experience requirement.
    You must achieve a satisfactory score on the school building leader exam required at the time the renewed provisional is issued. 

 

 

Time Extensions
  • Specific conditions occurring within the lifetime of the provisional, initial or transitional certificate may allow for an expired certificate to be extended up to two years, with the possibility of a third year time extension. For details, go to Time Extensions.

  • Military Service Time Extension
    • If you were enrolled in a Teacher Education Program approved by the NY State Education Department for recommending either Provisional or Permanent Certification, and your teacher preparation study was interrupted by active military service between 9/11/01 and 2/1/04, you are eligible for a time extension to meet the Provisional and Permanent requirements.

    • The time extension will be equal to the same period of time as your active military service, and will begin on September 1, following the conclusion of that military service.

    • This time extension is intended to allow you to complete the approved college program and any other certification requirements.
