Continuing Competency Activities

This requirement pertains to continuing education activities for teachers of speech and language disabilities. It is only for applications submitted through the pathway entitled “NYS Professional License – Certificate Progression”.

This requirement can be satisfied with any of the options listed below. Options #1 and #2 below must be completed after the issuance of the Initial Speech and Language Disabilities certificate, while option #3 can be completed any time.

Options

  1. ASHA Continuing Education activities (minimum 40 hours/4.0 units). Please submit a copy of your ASHA Continuing Education Registry transcript showing all activities you have completed since the issuance of your Initial Speech and Language Disabilities classroom teaching certificate. The transcript should be submitted in PDF format to tcert@nysed.gov with “ASHA Continuing Education hours” in the subject line. Your email should also include your full name (as it appears in TEACH) and either your date of birth, or the last four digits of your SSN.

    Note: ASHA Continuing Education activities must be completed under a valid Initial Speech and Language Disabilities certificate.

  2. 40 hours of professional development approved by a New York State public school district or BOCES under its professional development plan. Coursework must be in any of the topics listed below:
    • classroom management
    • literacy education
    • development of knowledge, understanding, and skills for working with general education teachers, as related to the impact of speech, language, and hearing disabilities on learning in the general curriculum areas of the New York State learning standards

    Proof of the professional development must be submitted in PDF format to tcert@nysed.gov with “Continuing Competency Activities” in the subject line. The email should include your full name and either your date of birth or the last four digits of your SSN.

  3. 6 semester hours of college coursework from an institution of higher education. The institution must have active (not expired) accreditation, and it must also have approved educator preparation programs leading to certification in the state where the institution is physically located. If you are not sure whether the institution has such programs, you must consult with the education department of the state where the institution is located. Coursework must be in any of the topics listed below:
    • classroom management
    • literacy education
    • development of knowledge, understanding, and skills for working with general education teachers, as related to the impact of speech, language, and hearing disabilities on learning in the general curriculum areas of the New York State learning standards
Coursework must be submitted via official college transcript.
