Continuing Competency Activities
This requirement pertains to continuing education activities for teachers of speech and language disabilities. It is only for applications submitted through the pathway entitled “NYS Professional License – Certificate Progression”.
This requirement can be satisfied with any combination of the options listed below totaling 40 clock hours as described below. Options #1 and #2 below must be completed while holding a valid Initial (or Initial Reissuance) Speech and Language Disabilities certificate, while option #3 can be completed any time – including prior to the issuance of the Initial Speech and Language Disabilities certificate.
Options
- ASHA Continuing Education activities (minimum 40 clock hours, or 4.0 units). Please submit a copy of your official ASHA Continuing Education Registry transcript showing all activities you have completed since the issuance of your Initial Speech and Language Disabilities classroom teaching certificate. Unofficial transcripts are not acceptable. The transcript should be submitted in PDF format to tcert@nysed.gov with “ASHA Continuing Education hours” in the subject line. Your email should also include your full name (as it appears in TEACH) and either your date of birth, or the last four digits of your SSN.

40 hours of professional development (PD) approved by a New York State public school district or BOCES under its PD plan. Proof of the PD can be submitted via the district/BOCES official PD tracking form, or a copy of a letter on official letterhead confirming that you completed 40 clock hours of PD under the approved PD plan. The document must be submitted in PDF format to tcert@nysed.gov with “Continuing Competency Activities” in the subject line. The email should also include your full name and either your date of birth or the last four digits of your SSN.
- 6 semester hours of college coursework from an institution of higher education. The institution must have active (not expired) accreditation, and it must also have approved educator preparation programs leading to certification in the state where the institution is physically located. If you are not sure whether the institution has such programs, you must consult with the education department of the state where the institution is located. Coursework must be in any of the topics listed below:
- classroom management
- literacy education
- development of knowledge, understanding, and skills for working with general education teachers, as related to the impact of speech, language, and hearing disabilities on learning in the general curriculum areas of the New York State learning standards
