New Supplementary certificate options for ESOL and Bilingual Extension

In response to the influx of recently arrived and asylum-seeking students, and to promote the teaching of English language learners in NYS schools, the Board of Regents recently adopted an emergency rule to provide flexibilities for the Supplementary Certificate and Supplementary Bilingual Education Extension. The Supplementary certificate is issued to New York State-certified classroom teachers to enable them to teach in a different subject area where a shortage exists. To verify the employment commitment, the district/employer must submit a Superintendent Statement in the TEACH system.

The ESOL Supplementary certificate is available in TEACH and the requirements can be found under the “Classroom Teacher” area of interest on the Search Certification Requirements webpage. The Supplementary Bilingual Education extension certificate is available in TEACH and can be found under the “Other School Service” area of interest.

After selecting the certificate, you can click on each requirement link for further information.

The Board of Regents has also approved an emergency rule to allow ESOL certified teachers to obtain a Supplementary Certificate in a content area. The Content Area Supplementary Certificates requirements can be found under the “Classroom Teacher” area of interest on the Search Certification Requirements webpage, select the content area and then select Supplementary.
