Coaching Licenses

An individual who does not hold a valid New York State teaching, school leader or pupil personnel service certificate (e.g. Physical Education, English, Mathematics, School Counselor) may be appointed as a temporary coach by a school if there are no certified individuals available with experience and qualifications to coach the team. The non-teacher coach must obtain a Coaching license by applying on-line through the NYSED TEACH system and must meet all the requirements to gain the coaching license.

An individual who never held a New York State coaching license may apply and meet the requirements for a Temporary Coaching License.

How to Apply for a Coaching License


Document Submission

All documentation must include acceptable identifying information (name as it is in TEACH, last four digits of social security number and date of birth). A copy of the certificate of completion of the approved First Aid, CPR and coaching courses may be emailed to tcert@nysed.gov . Types of Coaching Licenses and Requirements

Temporary Coaching License
  • Valid First Aid Course, except as provided below*:
    A currently valid (not expired) first aid certificate of completion, that is:

*Employed Police Officers and Firemen in New York State (NYS) may have the employer submit verification of employment as a Police Officer or Fireman in lieu of completing the First Aid course.

NYS certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic may submit a copy of their valid NYS issued EMT or paramedic card or may have the employer submit verification of employment in NYS as an EMT or paramedic in lieu of completing the First Aid course.

NYS licensed and registered, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Professional Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician, Certified Athletic Trainer, Dentist, Physical Therapist or Optometrists must submit a copy of their current NYS registration certification and either have the employer submit verification of employment or the applicant may submit a copy of a valid First Aid certificate (any First Aid).

Temporary Coaching License 1st Renewal

If you held a Temporary Coaching license, this is the next level license in the same sport as the Temporary Coaching License.

Temporary Coaching License 2nd – 4th Renewal

If the last coaching license you held was the Temporary 1st Renewal, or if you held one or two 2nd – 4th Renewals, and you do not meet the requirements for the  Professional Coaching license, this is your next level for the  same sport.

Courses must be from an approved provider.

Professional Coaching License

If you held at least two temporary coaching licenses in the same sport and have at least three seasons coaching under those temporary licenses, you may be eligible for a Professional Coaching License in the same sport as the temporary licenses.

Professional Coaching License Renewal

You must have held a Professional Coaching License in the same sport as the Renewal application.

How to Apply Coaching Licenses

STEP 1: Log In to your NY.gov TEACH account

  • Login to your NY.gov TEACH account: TEACH Login
  • Go to TEACH Online Services
  • Scroll to "Online Applications" and click on “Apply for Certificate.”

STEP 2: Verify / Update Profile

  • Confirm your legal name including spelling, prefixes, and suffixes.
  • Update your mailing address, email, and phone number(s).
  • Confirm your U.S. Citizenship status (Y/N).
  • Enter your education information. 
  • Enter your coaching experience, if any, including sport and dates
    • Learn how to add your education and experience information (link)

Step 3: Add the coaching license you wish to gain to the application
Select the following options from the menu:

  • Select an Area of Interest----Other School Service
  • Select a Subject Area----Coaching
  • Select a Grade Level----Adolescent – Grades 7-12
  • Select a Title ----Sport
  • Select a Type of Certificate ----Temporary Coaching LicenseTemporary Coaching License 1st Renewal, Temporary Coaching License 2nd – 4th Renewal, Professional Coaching License, Professional Coaching License Renewal then click Add.

NOTE: After you select your pathway, you will go back to the "Add a Certificate" page. Scroll to the bottom of that page and click "Next"

Step 4: Continue with the Application
