About the National Troops to Teachers Program

The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) Troops to Teachers (TTT) Program is a national program designed to assist eligible military personnel to transition to a new career as public school teachers in targeted schools. The program also provides public school districts with the opportunity to benefit from the skills, education and experience of a pool of mature, motivated, experienced, and dedicated personnel. For more information on the DANTES TTT Program go to the National TTT home page at www.dantes.doded.mil/dantes_Web/troopstoteachers/index.asp External Link Icon. Registration required
Eligible military personnel seeking careers in public education and wishing to avail themselves of the assistance provided by the DANTES TTT program must register for the program before assistance can be provided. Registration is done only through the DANTES National TTT office by first completing the Self Determination Eligibility Guide above, and then applying online if the Self Determination Eligibility Guide determines the possible eligibility for the program.  Final determination of eligibility is made by the DANTES National TTT office when the DANTES National TTT office receives the documentation requested to be sent to the DANTES National TTT office during the online application process.

Applicants can expect to receive a letter from the DANTES National TTT office within two weeks from the date their Registration Packet is received at the DANTES National TTT office. The letter will inform them of their status as a participant in the program. Applicant information is maintained in a database. School districts can search the database for perspective teachers, and our state offices can use the database to provide more individual assistance. Applicants remain active in the National TTT referral database until they are hired by a school district, request their name be withdrawn or do not respond to periodic surveys.

Mentor Connection
Accessible through the DANTES TTT web site, the Mentor Connection is an Internet based system established so interested individuals can contact, via e-mail, other military veterans who have already made the transition from active duty to public education through DANTES TTT. Mentors have volunteered to answer questions about their transition to teaching and the rewards and challenges of their new career. As of July 2007 there are over 150 Mentors from all branches of the military, representing nearly every state. They provide a valuable resource to other veterans or active duty personnel who are exploring the possibility of beginning a new career as a teacher.
