School Building Leader Experience Requirements Updated

At its March 2023 meeting, the Board of Regents adopted a regulatory amendment to revise the experience requirements for Professional School Building Leader (SBL) certification by removing the requirement that at least one of the three years of experience in an educational leadership position be as a school building leader. This amendment will provide school districts and BOCES with greater flexibility to assign administrators to the roles and responsibilities that are needed in their local education agencies. It will also ensure that candidates for the Professional SBL certificate receive appropriate recognition of their experience in the educational leadership service, regardless of whether they are assigned to a role that covers a single school building or multiple buildings within a school district.

Note: Candidates who have had their applications evaluated in the past under the prior regulation can request that their employer submit updated verification of their educational leadership experience. Information on how employers can submit the Superintendent Statement (“Verification of Admin Exper”), or in some cases, the Verification of Experience form can be found here: https://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/form.html
