Revised Definition of a Year of Experience

April 12, 2022. At its March 2022 meeting, the New York State Board of Regents modified the definition of a year of experience for Permanent or Professional certification. The new definition effective March 30, 2022 reads:

  • Year of experience for Permanent or Professional certification means a minimum of 180 days in a 12-month period of full-time satisfactory experience, or its equivalent, in an educational setting acceptable to the Department.

Individuals would continue to need to meet the experience requirement for the Permanent or Professional certificate sought, which may include experience in schools and/or specific areas. The definition provides more flexibility in calculating a year of experience, permitting a variety of part-time experiences that could be equivalent to 180 or more days of full-time experience in a 12-month period. The definition no longer requires periods of continuous experience or teaching experience in the subject area of the certificate sought.

The Teacher Professional Certificate Experience Requirement webpage and Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) Permanent Certificate Experience Requirement webpage have been updated to reflect the new definition. The webpages continue to list acceptable experiences for Professional and Permanent certification.

In addition, new verification of experience forms are available for teachers and PPS professionals in response to the new defintion. The Superintendent Statements for teacher and PPS experience will be updated with this new verification of experience format in the TEACH system in the near future.
