Elimination of the edTPA Requirement for Certification
April 12, 2022. At its April 2022 meeting, the New York State Board of Regents voted to modify the teacher performance assessment requirement for certification by eliminating the edTPA requirement for certification and, instead, requiring that New York State-registered teacher preparation programs integrate a teacher performance assessment into the candidates’ student teaching, practicum, or similar clinical experience (e.g., residency, mentored in-service component).
The edTPA will no longer be a certification requirement as of April 27, 2022. On that date, the edTPA safety net, edTPA Multiple Measures Review Process (MMRP), and the availability of the Conditional Initial certificate would also end, as these accommodations would no longer be needed.
Any individual who is pursuing, or plans to pursue, New York State teacher certification would no longer need to complete the edTPA as of April 27, 2022. This includes, but is not limited to, individuals who:
- Are in-state or out-of-state,
- Completed a teacher preparation program in the past,
- Did not pass the edTPA in the past,
- Currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program,
- Currently have an application in TEACH, or
- Currently hold an Emergency COVID-19 certificate.
All active teacher certificate applications that are submitted before April 27, 2022, and have the edTPA requirement listed as “unmet”, will have this requirement automatically marked as “exempted” in the TEACH system on April 27, 2022. Applications for teacher certification will no longer include the edTPA as a requirement beginning April 27, 2022.
In addition, if the edTPA is the only remaining requirement for certification on the application (i.e., all other requirements for certification are met), this requirement will automatically be marked as “exempted” in the TEACH system and the application will be approved on April 27, 2022. On the following day, the certificate will either be issued or be in “Evaluation Complete – Pending Final Review” status, which is described on the Status of Your Application webpage.
