Second Update Child Abuse Identification Workshop
**IMPORTANT – SECOND UPDATED CHILD ABUSE TRAINING REQUIRED**
Child Abuse and Neglect Identification Workshop (Second Update)
Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework is required for those seeking educator certification and/or staff qualifying as mandated reporters. The amended Section 413 of the Social Services Law requires the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework to include the addition of guidance on identifying an abused or maltreated child when such child is an individual with an intellectual or developmental disability. The law requires that every person who is required to take the mandated training related to child abuse, including those who have previously undergone this training, must complete the updated curriculum by November 17, 2026.
This training is available only from a provider approved by the New York State Education Department. A list of providers is available here: Child Abuse Identification and Reporting - Providers.
Implementation Timeline
September 1, 2025- All NYS Approved Providers of this workshop are required to integrate and present the new curriculum in trainings offered on or after September 1, 2025.
October 1, 2025- Applications for certification submitted on or after October 1, 2025, will require completion of the second updated workshop for issuance of the certificate.
New York State Approved Teacher Preparation Programs entering recommendations for certification on or after October 1, 2025, must verify that the second updated workshop has been completed at the time of the recommendation.
November 17, 2026- All educators and school staff who are mandated reporters must complete the Second Updated Child Abuse Identification workshop by November 17, 2026.
