Reissuance of Expired Initial Classroom Teacher and School Building Leader Certificates
To extend the validity of an expired certificate, individuals may consider either a time extension and/or an Initial Reissuance, depending on whether or not they meet the eligibilty requirements.
Reissuance of an Expired Initial Classroom Teacher Certificate
Initial classroom teacher certificates may be reissued once for five years by completing the following requirements.
- Experience: Individuals must have less than three years of acceptable experience as required for the Professional teacher certificate and need to complete the Attestation of LESS Than Three Years of Acceptable Classroom Teaching Experience for the Initial Reissuance
to verify their eligibility for this certificate.
- Examination: Individuals must take and pass the NYSTCE Content Specialty Test(s) in the area(s) required for the Initial certificate sought within one year (365 days) before or after the date of a paid application for the Initial Reissuance, or during the validity period of the Emergency COVID-19 certificate held in the same certificate title of the Initial Reissuance sought.
Reissuance of an Expired School Building Leader Certificates
First Reissuance
Initial School Building Leader certificates may be reissued for five years for the first time by completing the following requirements.
- Experience: Individuals must have less than three years of acceptable experience and need to complete the Attestation of LESS Than three Years of Acceptable Administrative Experience for the Initial Reissuance
to verify their eligibility for the Initial Reissuance.
- Examination: Individuals must take and pass the NYSTCE School Building Leader Assessment within one year (365 days) before or after the date of a paid application for the Initial Reissuance, or during the validity period of the Emergency School Building Leader COVID-19 certificate.
Second Reissuance
Educators who have been employed in a school district or BOCES to provide Instructional Support Services (ISS), as defined in Section 80-5.21 of the Commissioner’s regulations, during three of the past five school years may be eligible for a second reissuance of their Initial School Building Leader certificate.
The Initial School Building Leader certificate may be reissued a second time if the educator meets all of the Professional School Building Leader certificate requirements except the experience requirement, and was employed in a school district or BOCES to provide Instructional Support Services (ISS), as defined in Section 80-5.21 of the Commissioner’s regulations, during three of the past five school years.
