Please note that the edTPA will no longer be a requirement for certification as of April 27, 2022. Please see the announcement about this certification change for more information.

Candidates who did not earn a passing score score on their required edTPA on or before June 30, 2018 must satisfy one of the following two requirements to be eligible for the edTPA safety net. For the safety net, “not earning a passing score” on the edTPA means receiving a failing numeric total score or an “Incomplete” total score with a numeric score on one or more task totals on the edTPA.

Eligibility Requirements for the Safety Net

  • Candidates must have a passing score on an Assessment of Teaching Skills – Written (ATS-W) that was taken on or before April 30, 2014.

OR

  • Candidates must receive an edTPA score report on or before June 30, 2018 that shows they did not pass the edTPA, take an ATS-W between the date of the edTPA score report and June 30, 2018, and pass the Assessment of Teaching Skills – Written (ATS-W). Candidates must receive the edTPA score report prior to taking an ATS-W and cannot take the ATS-W after June 30, 2018. They may receive their ATS-W score report after June 30, 2018.

Applying for the Safety Net

Candidates can apply for the safety net after completing the above requirements by sending an email to examsafetynet@nysed.gov with their first and last name as is appears in their TEACH account, the last four digits of their social security number, the date of birth, and a request that the safety net be applied. The Office of Teaching Initiatives will then review the request.
