Subject: Redeveloped Part Two: (Math) of the Multi-Subject: Secondary Teachers Grades 7-12 Content Specialty Test for Students with Disabilities Certification pdf file (308KB)

In response to concerns expressed by the field, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has been working to redevelop Part Two: (Math) of the Multi-Subject: Secondary Teachers Grades 7-12 Content Specialty Test (MST 7-12) for candidates pursuing the Students with Disabilities Grades 7-12 Generalist certificate.

This is to inform you that Part Two:
(Math) of the MST 7-12 for Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist certification is scheduled to be released operationally in fall 2018.

A committee of P-12 educators, including experts in mathematics and in the teaching of Students with Disabilities, higher education teacher preparation faculty, and other New York State education stakeholders have participated in the redevelopment of the Assessment Framework for the Part Two: (Math) of the MST 7-12 for Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist certification.

Preparation Materials and Testing Requirement

Students who plan to take Part Two: (Math) of the MST 7-12 prior to fall 2018 should use the current preparation materials. Students who are preparing to take the revised Part Two: (Math) in the fall of 2018 or later will need to prepare to take the revised test. The revised Framework will be available the first week in October 2017 so that educator preparation programs can better prepare for the revised Part Two: (Math) when it is operational in the fall of 2018. The revised Study Guide will be available in the spring of 2018. Material for both the current and revised tests will be available on the NYSTCE Preparation webpage. Candidates should carefully select the correct preparation material based on when they anticipate taking the test.

Please note that the information in this memo pertains only to changes in Part Two: (Math) of the MST 7-12 for Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist certification; Parts One and Three of the Framework and the Parts One and Three related test material will remain the same.

Please inform all your teacher candidates for this certificate title that, when the revised Part Two: (Math) of the MST 7-12 is implemented, candidates will be required to take and pass the revised Part Two: (Math). Please help to ensure that this information is disseminated to your faculty, certification officers, and most importantly, your candidates.

Safety Net for Part Two: Math of the MST 7-12

In January 2016, the Board of Regents adopted a temporary safety net for candidates who have taken and failed Part Two: (Math) of the MST 7-12. This safety net was extended to June 30, 2018. The Department plans to recommend to the Board of Regents an amendment to extend the current safety net for Part Two: (Math) of the MST 7-12 until at least December 2018.
