Dear Colleague: The State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching, in its advisory role to the Board of Regents and the Commissioner, is proposing that New York adopt state standards in the area of professional development. The State Education Department is releasing a draft, authored by the Standards Board, titled Proposed New York State Professional Development Standards. The purpose of these standards is to define effective professional development and support the implementation of professional development programs throughout the State. This document should be considered a preliminary draft. Only after sharing the draft widely and receiving comments from all interested parties, will the standards be forwarded to the Board of Regents for its review and consideration. I invite you to review, discuss and debate with your colleagues the contents of this draft. I also invite your suggestions regarding ways these standards might be implemented. We urge you to submit your comments using the Web Response Form. However, we welcome your comments in any form, and they may also be mailed to: Nancy Taylor Baumes, Secretary to the Standards Board The deadline for receipt of comments is January 15, 2008. Thank you. Sincerely, Johanna Duncan-Poitier
