Effective Date
- My certificate was issued with an effective date that is in the future. I want to begin applying for positions in school districts now; can my effective date be changed to today’s date?
By regulation, certificate effective dates can only be set on either February 1 or September 1 of any given school year. The effective date is based on when the last academic or programmatic requirement for certification was met. If the last requirement was met February 1 – August 31 of a school year, you would be assigned a September 1 effective date. If the last requirement was met September 1 – January 31 of a school year, you would be assigned a February 1 effective date. Regardless of which effective date you are assigned, you are eligible for employment in New York State’s public school districts beginning on the date your certificate is issued. School districts are aware of this and can verify your status online through New York’s TEACH Online Services system. For more information go to Clarifying information regarding the date by which newly-certified teachers can begin employment .
- Based on the information above, I believe my certificate was issued with an incorrect effective date. How can I fix this?
Go to the Contact Us form. Use the form to submit your request in writing. If you would like a certificate printed with the new effective date, you will have to apply online through the TEACH Online System .
