Experience Requirements - Permanent/Professional

Experience Requirement -  Permanent

One of the requirements for permanent certification is two full years of classroom teaching service which must be completed in a public or approved independent school at the K-12 level. Experience does not have to be in a NYS public school.

To submit your experience for review, complete the employment history section when applying being certain to detail:

• the name and location of the school
   
• public/private status
   
• subject or area and grade level taught
   
• dates and type (part time/full time)

Special Notes

• 360 days of substitute teaching experience may satisfy the experience requirement in lieu of two full years.
   
• Teaching experience in a preschool or daycare facility is acceptable provided it is in a private school licensed by New York state.
   
• Experience as a teaching assistant is not applicable towards this requirement.

One of the requirements for professional certification is three full years of classroom teaching service which must be completed in a public or approved independent school at the K-12 setting. Experience does not have to be in a NYS public school.

• subject or area and grade level taught
   
• dates and type (part time/full time)

• 540 days of substitute teaching experience may satisfy the experience requirement in lieu of three full years.
   
• Teaching experience in a preschool or daycare facility is acceptable provided it is in a private school licensed by New York state.
   
• Experience as a teaching assistant is not applicable towards this requirement.
   
• If you have more than one certificate, the service under one of them may be used to fulfill the experience requirement for all the other Professional teaching certificates.
   

Experience Requirement - Mentored

New teachers, who do not hold a provisional/permanent certificate or who have not completed two years of verifiable experience prior to obtaining initial certification, must complete one year of mentored experience. You Must File an Application for Evaluation for Certification

• Individuals who have completed an approved teacher preparation program should apply for certification using . Consult your college’s certification officer for the appropriate program codes and other institution-specific information you must include in your TEACH profile.
   
• Those applying for certification through the individual transcript evaluation pathway should also apply using . Applicants can go to Individual Evaluation of U.S. Credentials for additional information. Those applicants with credentials from non-U.S. institutions can go to Individual Evaluation of Non-U.S. Credentials for more information.
   

NOTE: PAPER RECORDS ARE DESTROYED AFTER THREE YEARS. You must submit original transcripts from all colleges/universities attended with grades, GPA, and, if applicable, the conferral date(s) of the degree(s) awarded if you have not done so within the last three years.
