Reissuance of an Expired Initial certificate
Initial Classroom Teacher Certificates
Your Initial classroom teacher certificate, if expired, may be reissued once, for five years and ONLY if you do not already have three years of teaching experience or its equivalent for a classroom teaching certificate
Initial School Building Leader Certificate
Your Initial School Building Leader certificate, if expired, may be reissued once for 5 years if you do not have three years of school building leader experience for the Professional School Building Leader certificate. The Initial School Building Leader certificate may be reissued for a second if you have met all requirements for the professional School Building Leader certificate except the three years of school building leader experience and you have been employed in a school district or BOCES to provide Instructional Support Services (ISS) as per section 80-5.21 during three of the last five years.
Requirements effective September 1, 2013
Effective September 1, 2013 the requirements for the Initial Reissuance will change for everyone who submits an application for the reissuance on or after September 1, 2013:
- The requirements for classroom teachers will be:
- Submit an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Have less than three years of full-time teaching experience or it's equivalent
- Complete 75 hours of acceptable professional development as prescribed in part 80-3.6 within the year prior to applying to the Department for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- Re-take and achieve a satisfactory score on the NYS Teacher Certification Examination, Content Specialty Test(s) in the area(s) required for the certificate sought, within one year of applying for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- The requirements for the School Building Leader will be:
- Submit an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Have less than three years of school building leader experience
- Complete 75 hours of acceptable professional development as prescribed in part 80-3.6 within the year prior to applying to the Department for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- Re-take and achieve a satisfactory score on the NYS School Building Leader exam, within one year of applying for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
Requirements effective until September 1, 2013
Requirements for a reissuance if you submit an application prior to September 1, 2013
- If your Initial classroom teacher certificate has been expired less than two years:
- File an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Have less than three years of full-time teaching experience or its equivalent
- File an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- If your Initial School Building Leader certificate has been expired less than two years:
- Submit an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Have less than three years of school building leader experience
- If your Initial classroom teacher certificate has been expired for over two years:
- Submit an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Complete 75 hours of professional development within one year of applying to the Department for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- Re-take and achieve a satisfactory score on the NYS Teacher Certification Examination, Content Specialty Test(s) in the area(s) required for the certificate sought, within one year of applying for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- If your Initial School Building Leader certificate has been expired for over two years:
- Submit an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Have less than three years of school building leader experience
- Complete 75 hours of acceptable professional development as prescribed in part 80-3.6 within the year prior to applying to the Department for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- Re-take and achieve a satisfactory score on the NYS School Building Leader exam, within one year of applying for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
Second reissuance of the School Building Leader Certificate
A School Building Leader Certificate may be reissued for a second time if you have met all requirements for the professional School Building Leader certificate except the three years of school building leader experience and you have been employed in a school district or BOCES to provide Instructional Support Services as per section 80-5.21 during three of the last five years.
- The requirements for the reissuance of the School Building Leader for ISS are:
- Submit an application for the reissuance and pay the fee
- Have less than three years of school building leader experience
- Hold a Masters Degree
- Complete 75 hours of acceptable professional development as prescribed in part 80-3.6 within the year prior to applying to the Department for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- Re-take and achieve a satisfactory score on the NYS School Building Leader exam, within one year of applying for the reissuance of your Initial certificate
- Workshop - Child Abuse Identification
- Citizenship Status - INS Permanent Residence or U.S. Citizenship
