College Supervised - Library Media Specialist Practicum

For the library media specialist certificate, two college-supervised practica of at least 20 days each in elementary and secondary school libraries under the supervision of a certified library media specialist are required.

Applicants may also meet this requirement by documenting at least one year full-time teaching experience as a library media specialist. Only paid experience gained in a private school, in a school outside New York State or in a New York State public school on the basis of holding a NYS Supplementary library media specialist certificate would be acceptable. For such experiences the chief school officer (superintendent, headmaster, etc.) completes the Substitution of Experience for Student Teaching form verifying satisfactory experience and returns it directly to this office.

The following experiences are unacceptable:

  • Practica completed that are part of a program that does not lead to a public school teaching certificate.

  • Practica in a public library, or library practica that are not part of an approved library media specialist program.

  • Practica that are less than 40 days or that do not take place in the necessary settings.
