Utica and Rome, along with other smaller commercial centers. The 5,882 square
mile area is an important agricultural center and encompasses the heavily forested
wilderness areas in the north that are part of New York's Adirondack Park.
The service sector is the leading employer in the Mohawk Valley area, with
government, trade and manufacturing also providing significant employment. Industry
is concentrated in the Utica-Rome area and in smaller centers like Herkimer,
Ilion, Little Falls, Gloversville, Johnstown, Amsterdam and Cobleskill. Manufacturers
produce a variety of products, including electrical equipment, primary metals,
leather and leather products. Transportation
The Mohawk Valley Region, and especially the northern section which extends into the Adirondack Park, is a four-season vacation land popular with anglers, boaters, campers, hunters and skiers. The Great Sacandaga Lake and Oneida Lake are popular destinations, along with the State Canal System. Residents and visitors enjoy museums such as the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica and the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, Revolutionary War historic sites, Turning Stone Casino in Oneida County and Howe Caverns, a geologic wonder in rural Schoharie County.
