Mid-Hudson Region
Location
The seven-county Mid-Hudson Region lies north of New York City and south
of the Capital Region. Its legendary landscape is a mix of urban areas, river
valley villages, farmlands and forests.

Business and Industry
The Mid-Hudson Region has a highly diversified economy, with concentrations
in electronics and computing, biomedical industries, pharmaceuticals, business
services and distribution. Tourism is also a significant element of the regional
economy.
Services, retail trade and manufacturing comprise the region's leading private
employers. Known for high technology, the Mid-Hudson Region supports a strong
concentration of scientists, engineers, physicists, computer scientists and
chemists working at a number of major industrial research laboratories.
The Mid-Hudson Region has the largest concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters
in New York State outside of New York City. It is home to IBM, Kraft General
Foods, PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch and many other major companies.
Apple-growing operations and wineries are features in several counties, and
dairy farms are scattered throughout the region.
Transportation
Highways: Numerous major highway routes (I-84, I-87, NY-17) pass through
the region and many converge on New York City.
Air Service: Stewart International Airport, near Newburgh, offers air
passenger service, as do county airports in Westchester, Dutchess, Sullivan
and Ulster.
Rail Service: Amtrak and Metro-North offer extensive passenger service.
Bus Service: Local bus service is available in metropolitan areas.
Four carriers provide inter-city service and the major carriers provide intrastate
service.

Recreational opportunities abound in this diverse region, which includes
the Catskill Park and several large State parks. The area boasts a number of
large year-round resorts. Skiing, hiking, golf and water sports are popular.
The region is also rich in historic sites, art galleries and museums, and has
become a destination for visitors seeking antiques, farmstand products, fine
dining and country inns. The area is also home to the famed Culinary Institute
of America in Hyde Park.
