Long Island Region
Location
The Long Island Region, located at the southern tip of New York State just
east of New York City, stretches about 120 miles east surrounded by the Long
Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The region's topography is relatively flat,
while its labyrinthine coast provides more than 1,100 miles of shoreline.

Business and Industry
While a significant number of Long Island residents commute to New York City
for employment, the region itself supports more than one million jobs.
The services sector, especially business and financial services, is by far the
largest industry on Long Island, accounting for more than one third of all private
sector, non-farm jobs. Although Long Island's manufacturing base is heavily
oriented toward high-technology companies, the area's economy is diversified.
Fortune 500 industries making their home in the region include Northrop-Grumman
and Pall Corp.
Transportation
Highways: Numerous limited-access highways criss-cross Long Island,
providing many alternate routes to New York City and distant points. Passenger
ferry service connects Long Island with New England.
Air Service: MacArthur and Republic airports provide air service, while
nearby Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports are easily accessible.
Rail Service: The Long Island Rail Road provides passenger service
throughout the region and to New York City, where nationwide connections can
be made.
Bus Service: Numerous public and private entities operate extensive
bus service throughout Long Island, to New York City, and long distance.
