INSTITUTIONAL UNIVERSE
All degree-credit colleges in New York State falling under the authority of the University of the State of New York and the Board of Regents. This group includes all public and private colleges with the exception of the two federal academies (Merchant Marine Academy and West Point).

UNDERGRADUATE
Enrolled in a 4- or 5-year bachelor's degree program, an associate's degree program, or a vocational or technical program below the baccalaureate level.

FIRST-TIME UNDERGRADUATE
An entering freshman who has never attended any college or other postsecondary institution. Includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer term and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits earned before graduation from high school).

GRADUATE 
Holding a bachelor's or first-professional degree, or equivalent, and taking courses at the post-baccalaureate level. Graduate students may or may not be enrolled in graduate programs (excluding first-professional programs).

FIRST-PROFESSIONAL STUDENT 
Enrolled in any of the following degree programs: Audiology (Au.D.),Chiropractic (D.C. or D.C.M.), Dentistry (D.D.S. or D.M.D.), Law (L.L.B., J.D.), Medicine (M.D.), Nursing (D.N.P.), Optometry (O.D.), Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), Physical Therapy (D.P.T.), Podiatry (D.P.M., D.P., or Pod.D.), Theology (M.Div., M.H.L., B.D., or Ordination), Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.).

DEGREE-CREDIT ENROLLMENT
Number of students enrolled in courses for credit. At the undergraduate level, includes students enrolled in vocational or occupational programs. Note:
This report counts Excelsior external degree-credit enrollees where they receive instruction. Beginning in 2005, it reports those who receive instruction through Excelsior under Excelsior. For Excelsior's external enrollment, call 518-474-5091.

FULL-TIME STUDENT
Students whose academic load, coursework or other required activity constitutes at least 75% of the normal full-time load.  Full-time undergraduate students on a semester calendar system carry at least 12 credit hours, graduate students at least 9. City University of New York graduate students must carry at least 12 credit hours to be considered full-time.

NONRESIDENT ALIEN: A person who is not a citizen of the United States and who is in the country on a temporary basis and does not have the right to remain indefinitely.

BLACK, NON-HISPANIC: A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa (except those of Hispanic origin).

AMERICAN INDIAN OR ALASKAN NATIVE: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.

 

ASIAN OR PACIFIC ISLANDER: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian sub-continent, or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, Samoa and Vietnam.

HISPANIC: A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.

WHITE, NON-HISPANIC: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, or in the Middle East (except those of Hispanic origin).

STUDENT WITH A DISABILITY

A student whose educational performance is affected by mobility, visual, acoustical, mental health, speech, orthopedic, or alcohol/substance abuse impairment(s), learning disability, traumatic brain injury, or other health impairment. 
   

OCCUPATIONAL
(as used in Form NYSED 2H-2, Enrollment of College Students with Disabilities)

Enrollment in an instructional program below the bachelor's level designed to prepare individuals with entry-level skills and training required for employment in a specific trade, occupation, or profession related to the field of study
   

NON-OCCUPATIONAL

All other degree-credit enrollment:  Students with disabilities seeking degrees or credit-bearing certificates/diplomas in areas other than those identified as "occupationally specific" as well as students taking degree-credit courses but not formally enrolled in a  program, sometimes referred to as "non-matriculated" students.
