Beginning with this 1998-99 table for New York City, each institution is counted once, at the location of the main campus, regardless of the number of branches.  This change is consistent with the procedure used over the years for counting the number of institutions for the entire state.  Previously, the New York City count included certain branches.

The following changes were made to the 1997-98 institution count to create the 1998-1999 institution count:

Additions-
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, graduate only, independent, Suffolk County

Christie's Education, Inc., four-year proprietary offering only master's programs, New York City

Devry Institute, four-year proprietary, New York City (Queens County)

Memorial School of Nursing, two-year independent, Albany

Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, four-year proprietary college, New York City

Closings-
SYRIT College, two-year independent, Brooklyn

Level Change-
Previously two-year, now classified as four-year or more:

SUNY Agricultural and Technical at Morrisville

SUNY College of Technology at Delhi

New York College for Wholistic Health Education and Research

Paul Smith's College
