Drafts of assessment frameworks and test designs for the first group of new and redesigned certification assessments are now available

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, the Department, in consultation with faculty from across New York State, has been leading the redesign of teacher and school building leader certification exams.  I am pleased to announce that preliminary drafts of assessment frameworks and test designs for the first group of new and redesigned certification assessments are now available on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) website:  http://www.nystce.nesinc.com/NY annProgramUpdate.asp

The performance expectations for New York’s next generation of teachers and school leaders will reflect the new, higher college- and career-readiness standards for students.  The new exams are designed to reflect the Common Core “shifts” (see http://engageny.org/resource/common-core-shifts/), with more constructed-response items and a mix of informational and literary text-based prompts.

Our aim is to make the NYSTCE site your one-stop source for information about the new certification exams and implementation schedule.  We urge you and your program administrators and faculty to use this information to help prepare your candidates to pass the new exams.  If you have further questions that are not answered on the NYSTCE site, please email EDCERTPOLICY@mail.nysed.gov and your questions will be considered for inclusion in our Frequently Asked Questions.

Sincerely,

John D’Agati
