The Braille Authority of North America (BANA) has announced that, effective January 4, 2016, the United States will implement the use of the Unified English Braille (UEB) system. For information about the system and the decision making process used to adopt it, please visit BANA’s website at http://www.brailleauthority.org/index.html .

As a result of this implementation, the New York State Education Department will align the revised Blind and Visually Impaired Content Specialty Test to the UEB system. This exam is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2015.

Institutions with Blind and Visually Impaired teacher preparation programs should begin realigning curriculum so that candidates will become familiar with the UEB system before having to take and pass the revised Blind and Visually Impaired Content Specialty Test beginning this 2015.
