Purpose and Program Services

blue dotTo increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students prepared to enter college, and improve their participation rate in mathematics, science, technology, health related fields and the licensed professions

blue dotSTEP provides academic enrichment in science and mathematics content areas.  Projects consist of academic year and summer components including:

  • Core subject instruction/Regents exam preparation
  • Supervised practical training
    Supervised research training
  • College admissions counseling
  • Standardized tests preparation
  • Career awareness/development activities

Institutional Eligibility

blue dotCompetitive grants are awarded to institutions of higher education (IHE).  IHE's administer projects in schools/school districts with 20 percent or more enrollment of historically underrepresented students.

Student Eligibility

blue dotSTEP serves secondary school students all over New York State.   Students must be:

  • Enrolled in Grades 7-12
  • Economically disadvantaged, or Black, Latino, Alaskan Native, or  American Indian; and will benefit from academic enrichment.

blue dotThe Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship - awards are available to New York State residents who are economically disadvantaged and/or a member of an underrepresented minority group, beginning or engaged in an approved program leading to a degree in a profession licensed by the Regents.

  • 81% of Grade 12 grade students graduate
  • 88% of STEP graduates enrolled in college
  • 63% of college going grads pursue MST
  • 8772 students served (Grades 7-12)
  • 51 STEP Projects
  • 85% of STEP High School Graduates Received Regents Diplomas
