Request for Additional Training Programs in Shortage Areas

The New York City Department of Education advised the State Education Department of severe shortages in selected personnel areas. The Commissioner of Education asked colleges and universities that prepare teachers and related service personnel particularly in the shortage areas (monolingual and bilingual special education teachers; monolingual and bilingual speech teachers; bilingual school psychologists; Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages; Occupational Therapists; and Physical Therapists) to assist the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) in meeting its increasing staffing needs. Universities are asked to inform incoming freshmen and other students that have not selected a major that:

• Teaching and related service personnel jobs are available in NYCDOE - now and in the foreseeable future.

• NYCDOE has significantly invested in scholarship programs to support the preparation of personnel in these shortage areas. More students will be able to afford a college education and have less reliance on student loans if they enter these special education teacher preparation programs.

Additional information on opportunities or scholarship assistance can be obtained by contacting the New York City Department of Education. http://schools.nyc.gov/teachnyc/
